I loaded the motorhome with tools, a spare generator and some supplies and headed to Florida on Friday (2 days ago). Diesel fuel was scarce and quite expensive but I managed to keep my tank topped and made it to Valrico (Tampa area).
My old neighborhood is on the Alafia River in Valrico and it was severely impacted by flooding. Yesterday I was able to get part way down the street and helped a neighbor install the generator I brought with me at his home.
The part of the street you can navigate is lined on both sides with ruined furniture and appliances from the flooded homes.
Today I will wade down the still flooded part of the road and help another neighbor and good friend remove furniture and flooring, drywall and insulation. Hopefully the river will fall enough to drive the motorhome down to this home so we can use my generator to supply electricity for tools. This is the home where I park the motorhome when I come visit in the winter. Yes, I’ve become a snowbird.
Meanwhile I’ll be watching these next few hurricanes just in case I need to hightail it out of here. I hope to be back home late in the week. We should have the wet material out of the home by then. After that it’s let it dry out for a couple days and begin rebuilding.
